Writing a chapter about the future of sport was difficult for a number of reasons. It is hard to know what might happen in the future in any industry, let alone one where things are changing so rapidly. What might seem to be important now may be viewed in three years' time as having been nothing more than a fad…… Just look at the dot.com boom or the interest in the football stock market flotation of the 1990s. Yet we can never know how significant the threat of terrorism, the problems of drug-taking or innovations in telecommunications might become.

The only way to assess what might happen in the future is constantly to monitor the sport industry and use some of the techniques outlined in the chapter to gather and analyse information.
