The claim is that British consumers are paying much more than their counterparts in mainland Europe for a wide range of goods. The car industry, and more recently the large supermarket chains, have come in for fierce criticism over their pricing policies. Such has been the level of concern, that both industries have been referred to the Competition Commission. The 'new economy'As the year has progressed, many of the major industrial economies, most notably the United States and the UK, have experienced strong economic growth, low inflation and low and falling unemployment.
