Help with podcasts, audio downloads and RSS feeds

You can think of podcasting as a mailing list subscription, only that instead of receiving messages in your inbox, you get fresh media content – in this case audio downloads - automatically delivered to your podcast-aware player, such as iTunes. It's fast, and once you have subscribed you don't need to come back to this page to see the latest available downloads.

Of course you can still listen to the audio files on your PC and download them manually – just as you always could. On a PC simply 'Right-click' on the link to the audio file and select File - Save as from the menu that appears.

Podcast feeds are sometimes also known as RSS feeds. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people plump for 'Really Simple Syndication'. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

Subscribing with Apple iTunes

  1. Open iTunes
  2. Click the "Advanced" menu item and select it's sub category "Subscribe to Podcast..."
  3. A small window will appear, type in http://media.pearsoncmg.com/intl/ema/ema_uk_he_sloman_generic_1/podcasts/sloman_news_pe_rss.xml and press Enter
  4. iTunes will connect to the Podcast and begin downloading
  5. You can always access your Podcast library by using the left-hand menu pane in iTunes
